Continued from the last post...
11. Where can I hire some mercenaries?
Mercenaries are not terribly easy to come by. You can usually find at least a few swords-for-hire in any given Sanctum. If you need more specialized troops (monks, rangers, knights, etc.) You will get to look around a bit.
12. Is there any place on the map where swords are illegal, magic is outlawed or any other notable hassles from Johnny Law?
Unless you are a dragon or some other noble, most Sanctums insist that weapons be peace-bound (full round to draw) within the walls. Arcane magic in a Sanctum is usually frowned upon but not usually illegal in and of itself. Again, unless you are dragon or some other noble, it's best to keep your power to yourself. In all Sanctums, non-dragons must yield to the authority of dragons. Failure to do so entitles the offended dragon to kill the offender.
13. Which way to the nearest tavern?
Sanctums have dozens of taverns. Often there are entire districts devoted to such businesses. People were stuck in them for generations, they got bored.
14. What monsters are terrorizing the countryside sufficiently that if I kill them I will become famous?
Across the Maelstrom are three (primary) threats. The first is roaming demons, devils, and assorted extraplanar evils. These creature are the main reason people live in the protection of the Sanctums. The second is the undead the demons, devils, and assorted extraplanar evils tend to create. The last is otherworldly horrors that seem to come from underground (aberrations mostly). Kill a few of the bigger ones and people will take notice.
15. Are there any wars brewing I could go fight?
Most Sanctums compete over limited resources to some degree. If the Dragonkings have a disagreement or are opposed on more fundamental lines, a war is inevitable. It's generally believed the only thing more threatening to a Sanctum than the demons is other Sanctums. At least, that was the situation before the Reckoning. Now, it's probable that the old conflicts with start up again.
16. How about gladiatorial arenas complete with hard-won glory and fabulous cash prizes?
The more amoral Sanctums have gladiatorial arenas. More civilized ones outlaw such things.
17. Are there any secret societies with sinister agendas I could join and/or fight?
Probably. Rumors of secret sects with the Castes are common and the Outcaste are probably everywhere.
18. What is there to eat around here?
With limited farmable land, lots of food is not easy to come by. Fishing is by far the most common way to get food. The seas also provide numerous plants that people make into food (including seaweed beers and wines). Other foods can be provided by magical means.
19. Any legendary lost treasures I could be looking for?
The land-that-was had numerous kingdoms and and empires that rose and fell. Almost nothing of those ages survived in the Sanctums. Finding any relics from any civilization prior to the Reckoning is considered legendary.
20. Where is the nearest dragon or other monster with Type H treasure?
The nearest Sanctum is likely ruled by a dragon, that's one option. Other than the Dragonkings, exiled dragons can be found across the Maelstrom. Often, not far from a Sanctum and in league with a demon, devil, or other nightmare.
